(Europeia, December 12, 2020) - On Saturday, December 11, Europeians took to the polls to elect the region's president for the next 70 days. Pichtonia, who last term served as outgoing President Peeps' second-in-command, received 71.7 percent of the vote, ultimately defeating Calvin Coolidge and his running mate Sopo 43 votes to 17.
Upon election, President Pichtonia, who ran alongside Vice President Kuramia, released an opening address from 34 Goldenblock Avenue, the seat of the region's presidency. "Europeians, we are ready and excited for this new term. We will ask a lot of you, but you knew that when you elected us, and I assume the feeling will be rather mutual," he said. "There is work to be done, sleeves to be rolled." He also took the opportunity to award Peeps the Order of Dedication for his service in the Cabinet and as president over the last three terms.
After the election, the president presented the following Cabinet nominees to Europeia's Senate for the confirmation process, which is still underway at the time of publication:
Monkey, minister of foreign affairs;
Kazaman, grand admiral;
Vor, minister of interior;
SkyGreen24, minister of communications;
Seva, minister of world assembly affairs;
Xecrio, minister of radio;
Lime, minister of culture; and
Lloenflys, attorney general
Initially, the two tickets campaigning for the presidency were Pichtonia with Kuramia and Darkslayer with Calvin Coolidge. The latter ticket withdrew from the race for real-life reasons two days after posting their platform, and Calvin Coolidge subsequently announced their candidacy for the presidency with Sopo. Both tickets held town hall events on Europeian Broadcasting Corporation radio, which were followed by text debates for the presidential and vice presidential candidates respectively.
In his opening address, the president promised the region an "unconventional" term. Although he served both as first minister and as chief of state during Europeia's split executive era, this is Pichtonia's first time as president, putting him in a unique position of experience as an executive leader.
